Moving to San Diego: Neighborhoods, Lifestyle and What to Expect

By CC Summerfield

People move to San Diego for the weather. They stay for everything else. After more than 20 years living in Ocean Beach and now Oceanside, I can tell you this county offers something rare: coastal living and real culture without the intensity of Los Angeles or San Francisco. If you are considering a move, here is an honest look at what to expect. The cost of living, honestly San Diego costs more than the national average. Locals call it the sunshine tax. You are paying for year round weather, a strong job market and a lifestyle where many of the best things to do are free or close to it: beaches, trails, parks and some of the best sunsets in the country. A strong and varied economy The city of San Diego alone is home to more than 1.4 million people, and the economy is broader than most people expect. Defense, healthcare, biotech and technology are major employers. Companies like Illumina and Qualcomm are based here. The region also has one of the largest concentrations of military installations in the country, along with UC San Diego, San Diego State University and the University of San Diego. Finding your neighborhood The right neighborhood depends on how you want to live. A few to know: La Jolla: luxury homes, coastal views and upscale shopping Del Mar: relaxed beaches and the Del Mar Racetrack Encinitas: surf culture with a local art and dining scene Carmel Valley: master planned communities popular with families North Park: breweries, art and a younger professional crowd Coronado: a small town feel and the Hotel del Coronado Point Loma: harbor views and a family friendly setting Little Italy and Downtown: walkable, high rise living with waterfront access Schools and healthcare Poway Unified, San Dieguito Union High and Del Mar Union are among the districts families ask about most. For healthcare, UC San Diego Health and Scripps Health anchor the region. Food and things to do From fish tacos to fine dining at George's at the Cove, the food scene is a big part of life here. Weekends fill up fast with Balboa Park, Torrey Pines, Mission Bay, the San Diego Zoo, Birch Aquarium and the USS Midway Museum. Annual events like San Diego Restaurant Week and the Little Italy Festa give you plenty to look forward to. Moving in 9 days or 9 months Whatever your timeline, the biggest question most relocating buyers have is which neighborhood fits them. That is where a local guide helps most. I can show you homes in person or on live video and help you narrow your search before you ever book a flight.
